Population Growth and Distribution

How do you imagine the world’s population will be in 100 years? In recent years, the way we interact with the planet has begun to accelerate certain side effects, such as climate change, the melting of the poles, and the loss of biodiversity. These problems, mainly caused by human activity, generate a series of chain impacts that affect civilization. Among these impacts is the way the world’s population is distributed and grows: phenomena such as migration to urban areas, the increase in population density in certain regions, and the decrease in others are directly related to the availability of resources, climate, and environmental conditions.

When imagining the population in the next 100 years, it is agreed that the demographic outlook will be very different from today, but we can infer that it will continue to grow, change, and evolve. However, “according to the latest estimates from the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, humanity will continue to grow over the next 50 years, reaching a peak of 10.3 billion between 2080 and 2100” (Roucaute, 2024). Although the world population is expected to increase for many more decades, the growth rate is rapidly slowing due to a drastic reduction in fertility rates: the average number of children per woman has been cut by more than half since the 1960s, dropping from more than 5 children to 2.3. Moreover, this growth will not be uniform, as while Africa is expected to see a greater increase, in Europe, Asia, and Latin America the population will tend to decline, as can be observed in the graphs below.

“Now moving on to the distribution of inhabitants, currently 55% of the population lives in urban areas, and according to the UN it is projected that by 2050 the percentage will increase by 13%, reaching a total of 68%. This means that around 2.5 billion additional people will live in cities, and almost 90% of that growth will be concentrated in Asia and Africa” (United Nations, n.d.). However, this pattern of concentration also generates significant challenges. On one hand, the massive arrival of people to cities puts great pressure on infrastructure, housing, and basic services, causing social inequalities and forcing many people to live in improvised neighborhoods or areas without proper planning, with limited access to water, electricity, and other resources. On the other hand, in rural and less developed regions the opposite is observed: population loss due to migration to large urban centers. This could generate territorial imbalances that affect economic development, agricultural production, and even the cultural preservation of smaller communities.

Other highly relevant aspects that directly affect the future distribution of the population are environmental and social factors, particularly climate change. “Currently, more than 64 million people are forced to move due to wars, hunger, persecution, and extreme environmental phenomena, and it is estimated that by 2050 there could be between 25 million and 1 billion environmental migrants, with 200 million being the most cited figure (International Organization for Migration, UN)” (Bassetti, 2022). These displacements are not only due to sudden phenomena such as hurricanes, floods, or storms, but also to more severe changes, such as desertification, coastal erosion, or loss of soil fertility, which force people to move permanently, further transforming population distribution. In Latin America there is a clear example of this problem: “In Central America, where temperatures have already increased by 0.5 °C since 1950 and are expected to rise by up to 2 °C by 2050, extreme climate phenomena such as prolonged droughts, storms, and floods will force thousands of people to abandon their homes” (Bassetti, 2022).

In conclusion, demographic projections show that the world’s population will continue to grow in the coming decades, although not uniformly, as it will depend on the region, and that cities will continue to concentrate more and more people. This increase and distribution bring significant challenges, from pressure on infrastructure and services to the displacement of rural communities and migration caused by climate change. Knowing about this is key to anticipating the consequences and planning more sustainable cities, ensuring social equity, and preparing for the new organization of the population in the future, thereby understanding how we can adapt to a world that is in constant transformation.
